If you have been in the solids handling industry long enough, you will know it’s not uncommon to find a pile of material building-up underneath a slide gate, see a diverter valve with a dedicated spanner, or discover an actuator with conspicuously large pock marks from the odd wallop (a.k.a. hammer rash).

The varying characteristics of dry solids (bulk density, flow-ability, abrasive, corrosive, particle size, shape, stickiness, hydroscopic, degradation, etc.) means that no particular slide gate or diverter design can be made to “fit” in every application. Failure to select the appropriate valve can result in downtime, material loss/waste, inaccurate weighing, conveying inefficiencies, atmospheric leakage, unnecessary parts inventory, frequent maintenance cycles, safety risks, and this list goes on and on!

Problems also manifest when liquid and gas handling valves are installed in place of a properly designed solids handling valve - which creates a myriad of problems. By design, gas and liquid handling valves can seal high pressures by utilising soft seals and seats. This essential design requirement is the source of all problems when applied in solids handling. Unlike gases and liquids, dry solids do not dissipate when closed against a soft seat and can easily erode the valve's sealing mechanism. Blast abrasion from dry particles can also wreak havoc on any exposed parts in the material flow stream. Powders easily migrate into packing or seal glands causing eventual leakage and seising of the moving parts. Just because a valve can handle a liquid, does not mean it will perform well with dry material!

The patented Quantum® Series Orifice Gate™ is specifically designed to handle dry bulk solids in gravity flow, dilute phase, or vacuum conveying systems.

A full flow orifice provides unrestricted conveying of material with no disk or ledges to impede flow or cause material bridging. The gate seat and live-loaded seals are shielded from blast abrasion by a metal insert, which provides a smooth bore through the valve improving performance and decreasing any pressure drop across the orifice. By design, the valve “self cleans” material from the seat on each stroke of the valve blade, improving overall seat life.
